JORGE LUIS MARRERO
(b. Havana, 1970)
Mr. Marrero graduated from the “20 de Octubre” Elementary Visual Arts School in 1985, the San Alejandro School of Fine Arts in 1989, and the Higher Art Institute in Havana, Cuba, in 1994. Some of his solo exhibitions are Kachita, Mango and Jim, with Kasia Badach and Francisco Alejandro Vives (GAIA Project, Havana, Cuba, 2006); Sovestportfilm presents: Postcoitum Existential Anguish (Habana Gallery, Havana, Cuba, 2002); What they taught us, what we learned, and what we did, with Nadia Mendoza (Habana Gallery, Havana, Cuba, 2000); Up Is As Down Is, Down Is As Up Is (Center for the Development of Visual Arts, Havana, Cuba, 1999); The Reluctant Debutant (Espacio Aglutinador Gallery, Havana, Cuba, 1996); Finding the Respondent (Luis de Soto Gallery, Faculty of Arts and Letters, University of Havana, Cuba, 1995). He has participated in various editions of the Salon of Contemporary Cuban Art (2005, 2001 and 1998) and in other events like the WHARF Festival (Centre d’Art de Basse Normandie, Hérouville St. Claire, Caen, France, 2004); the 3rd Montreal Biennial (Centre International d’Art Contemporain, Montreal, Canada, 2002); the Art Fair of The Royal College of Art (London, United Kingdom, 2002); the Art Chicago Fair (Festival Hall, Navy Pier, Chicago, Illinois, USA, 2002 and 2001) and the 3rd International Cuenca Biennial (Cuenca, Ecuador, 1996). In 2008, he was Artist in Residence at the Batiscafo Project in Cuba, and in 2004 at the Cuban Artists Fund in New York, USA.
